Có một số danh từ tập hợp quen thuộc có thể bạn đã biết, chẳng hạn như a litter of kittens hay a pride of lions; những danh từ khác ít được sử dụng hơn nhưng vẫn được nhiều người biết đến, đó là các trường hợp của a gaggle of geese và a murder of crows, và có những danh từ khác có lẽ bạn chưa từng nghe tới như a crash of rhinoceros hay a descent of woodpeckers.

Rất nhiều danh từ tập hợp tương tự như thế đã được liệt kê trong danh sách các "thuật ngữ riêng" thế kỷ 15, chẳng hạn như trong cuốn Book of St Albans của Dame Juliana Barnes (1486).
Một số khác rất được ưa thích hoặc được sử dụng với tính chất hài hước thực chất có lẽ chưa từng được lưu hành một cách chính thức nhưng đã từng được các văn sĩ thời cổ xưa đưa vào các tác phẩm của mình, đáng chú ý phải kể đến Joseph Strutt với tác phẩm Sports and Pastimes of England (1801).
